There have been several versions of iOS since the inception of iPhone and Apple have thrown several version of iOS to it consumers and they are still working on new ones.

Here is a breakdown of iOS from it first to it current (not last). As of the time of this writeup the current iOS is 9.0 beta which was released just some hours ago (August 6, 2015).

iOS 9.0 beta is latest. Released August 6th, 2015

The first iOS (then known as iPhone OS, was renamed to iOS in June 2010). iOS 1x got the following updates:
