Jailbreak an iPhone may lead to different issues that you most fix, but they are rather not hard to do as they can done by anyone who knows how to use computer with the help of ready-made software.
After Jailbreak and you discovered that your iPhone 3G/3GS is locked to a specific carrier network any SIM you insert will result to unknown or no network connectivity for that reason you are left with two option its either you insert the right SIM or you unlock for a different network, basically unlocking an iPhone is not a big deal what makes it a big deal is when you cant follow the right process.

    Thanks for the post.I would like to share my experience in unlocking my iPhone 3G. I wanted to unlock it from the respective locked network but did not want to jailbreak it.As jailbreak makes the user to lose the warranty of the phone.I was also not comfortable in using the available unlocking tools.I searched and found that Onlinegsmunlock.com provides such a permanent unlocking service for iPhone models.They unlock the iPhone through the remote unlock service which would be a better option because,we need not give the mobile to someone else nor do we have any chance to enter the wrong unlock codes.This type of unlocking was very apt for me.I unlocked my mobile and now free to switch networks.

      I think this is the best way to unlock if they can do it for free but it seems their services is limited to some network and does not support for some model of iPhone. You may need the jailbreaking anyway. I wish there is another way to unlock without having to jailbreak
